Important Notice: Emergency Maintenance & Mandatory Water Conservation

UPUD is currently performing emergency maintenance on our water treatment plant, and as a result, mandatory water conservation measures are in effect.

We are asking all customers to temporarily reduce outdoor water use, especially for landscaping. While water service continues, you may notice temporary changes in taste, smell, or color. These are aesthetic only.

Your water remains safe to drink. UPUD continues to meet all state and federal water quality standards.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is water conservation currently mandatory?

To ensure enough water supply while our treatment plant undergoes urgent maintenance. Conservation helps reduce strain on the system and allows us to maintain service for all customers during this critical time.

What water use is restricted?

We're asking you to temporarily stop or significantly reduce:

  • Lawn watering and garden irrigation
  • Washing driveways, sidewalks, or cars
  • Filling pools, fountains, or water features

Indoor water use is not restricted—but we always encourage responsible use.

How long will this be in effect?

We expect the conservation measure to last approximately [insert estimate if available]. We’ll keep you informed of any changes.

Is my water safe to drink?

Despite the ongoing maintenance, your water is being treated and tested according to all state and federal public health standards. We take water quality seriously and are continuously monitoring the system.

I noticed a strange taste, smell, or color. Should I be worried?

Not at all. These are temporary and purely aesthetic changes due to shifts in treatment process or water movement in the pipes. Examples include:

  • A mild chlorine scent
  • Earthy or mineral taste
  • Cloudiness or slight discoloration

These do not affect water safety. If you're concerned, let the water run for a few minutes or refrigerate a pitcher for improved taste.

What steps is UPUD taking to ensure water quality?

  • Continuous testing by certified water treatment operators
  • Compliance with all California State Water Board standards
  • Real-time adjustments to treatment to respond to system changes
